You’ve made it! After considering a job for English speakers in Israel, applying, interviewing, and finding the ideal internship for you as part of Career Israel’s internships in Israel program, you are almost ready to begin.
But wait a second, there are few things you need to know and be aware of before you start. Nothing major, just a few topics that will help you ease into your new position:
- Be direct: Although it may seem Israeli’s are often blunt and a bit abrasive, they are actually just direct and some don’t fuss with pleasantries. Of course, this is a generalization but when you communicate in your workplace – be direct and say what you mean without a lot of ‘fluff’ talk around.
- Hierarchy in the workplace: As in all companies, there is always hierarchy at work, especially at larger companies. In Israel, the situation is a bit more liberal. Although the atmosphere may be professional, the pleasantries and friendliness allow for free communication with any rank or management level. You should feel comfortable speaking up and expressing your opinion, it will be valued.
- Dress code: Casual. This has been the case in Israel for many years and still today people feel comfortable to go to work in jeans, sneakers, t-shirts, and even flip flops during the summer. Keep in mind that there are some professions that require a bit more face time with clients and thus the dress code is a bit more upscale.
- Networking: This is a big part of Israeli culture. Israel is a small country and within it, the work environment is even smaller. People know people who know people. Make an effort to meet new people and make connections. You never know where it will lead you.
- Work and Play, to the extreme: Israelis put time into working. They oftentimes stay at work much later than 6 pm and are driven to succeed and make progress. However, come the weekend, the tables are turned and they are out to play! Staying out late at night, meeting friends for lunch or at the beach, and traveling to hike and explore the country. Try this work-play balance to make the most of your internship in Israel.
The Israeli workplace, overall, is a comfortable place to experience. It is not harsh but it is fast-paced. Be yourself, enjoy your time, and don’t forget to have fun on the weekend.
